The first time you visit, we ask whether you accept analytics cookies. Until you answer, and for good if you refuse, no analytics or session recording runs.

Whatever you choose, two things can still be stored: a small cookie that remembers your answer, and, if you open the contact page, a spam check. Both are described below.

You can change your answer at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.

Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. Browsers can also keep information in other ways, such as local storage. The UK rules on cookies, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, cover all of them, so this policy does too.

The law allows storage without consent when it is strictly necessary to provide something you have asked for. These two are the only ones, and neither is used for advertising or to follow you around the web.

Set by us, in a cookie, as soon as you answer the cookie question. It records whether you accepted analytics, so we do not ask again on every page. It lasts 180 days, or until we change this policy in a way that needs a new answer.

Set by Cloudflare (challenges.cloudflare.com) in your browser's local storage, not a cookie, and only if you open the contact page. It is the spam check on the contact form, so we can tell people from bots. It has no expiry date and stays until you clear your browser data.

If you accept, we load Google Tag Manager, which starts two measurement tools. If you refuse, none of the items below is set.

Google Analytics

From Google. It counts visits, the pages people read, where they came from and roughly what device they use, so we can see what is useful. Its cookies are _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier, and each lasts up to two years. We do not use it for advertising and have switched off Google's advertising features.

Microsoft Clarity

From Microsoft. It records how people use a page, such as where they click and scroll and how far they read, and turns that into heatmaps and session replays that we use to find parts of the site that are confusing. Its cookies are _clck, which lasts up to a year, and _clsk, which lasts a day. Clarity may also set a small number of cookies from Microsoft's own domains, such as MUID; your browser's cookie list always shows exactly what is currently set. Clarity masks what you type into form fields, and we have switched on masking for CogniBot, so what you enter in the contact form or ask CogniBot is not recorded. Other text on the page, such as our own headings and paragraphs, is visible in recordings.

Both tools receive your IP address and browser details when they run. Our privacy policy says who they are, where the data goes and how long it is kept.

Refusing is as easy as accepting, costs you nothing, and does not change anything you can do on this site. Use the Cookie settings link in the footer to accept or refuse at any time. A refusal also stops the tools from loading on your next page.

To remove what has already been stored, clear this site's cookies and data in your browser settings.

No advertising or retargeting pixels, no social media buttons, no embedded videos or maps, and no third-party chat widgets.

Our fonts are served from our own domain, so your browser makes no request to Google or any other font service.

CogniBot, the question box on this site, is our own. It keeps the conversation in the page's memory, which is cleared when you reload or close the page, and stores nothing on your device.

Like every website, ours receives your IP address and browser details with each request. Our host keeps short-lived logs of them for security and troubleshooting, and when you open the contact page Cloudflare receives them too. None of this is stored on your device. The privacy policy explains who receives what and for how long.

If we ever add anything else that stores information on your device, this page will change first. Anything that is not strictly necessary will ask for your permission before it runs.
